What is that for? Most people using the Internet via dial-up modems have a different IP address assigned to them each time they go online. Groups communicating on the Internet often find it useful to know each other's current IP address. Often, it is sufficient to know one's own IP and report it to a friend or colleague via email or IM. But many people do not know how to discover their current IPs. vocIP displays it on the desktop.
Some people run web pages from their personal computer, and wish the IP of the computer to be available at a public place. File transfers (including those happening via Apple File Protocol) and ad hoc chat rooms (done via Hotline, KDX, Trout Mask or other devices) depend upon at least one communicating partner having this information. Individuals who host chat channels permanently need to have their IP's available for those who wish to sign on but would otherwise have no way of knowing the chat location's current IP. Doing this by means of one of the large "tracker" servers means being open to anybody who wishes to look up the current address. With a device such as vocIP, you can control who can discover the current IP by giving only to those whom you wish to participate the permanent location of the web page with the information about the temporary IP. vocIP in its free version allows the instant reporting of the IP to a web page. Upcoming editions of the vocIP will permit the creation of communication rings that can be permanently monitored and updated from a vocIP palette, without members having to consult a web page to obtain the current IPs. To download: If you are using Macintosh OS 9 or OS X, please click on the appropriate link to download the application to your default folder.
If you are using Windows, please click ONCE on the link. When the dialog box appears, be careful to choose the SECOND BUTTON FROM THE LEFT --"Save"-- and not the default button in the first position. At the next screen, BE SURE TO SELECT "Application" FROM THE PULL-DOWN MENU AT BOTTOM OF THIS DIALOG BOX. Select a location for the download, and click the button "Save" After downloading, please do this BEFORE running vocIP for the first time:vocIP has been tested in both Macintosh and Windows environments, and found to be stable, effective and harmless. It writes to your disk only for purposes of creating a preferences file storing information for reporting the IP to a URL of your choice; if you never report the IP online, you have no need to create such a file. vocIP changes your directory in no other way at all, and the module never communicates with any party other than the server you specify in its preferences.
